Pedestrian killed in Yuba City accident

A man died after getting hit by a pickup early Sunday evening while walking across Gray Avenue at Forbes Avenue in Yuba City.

The victim, whose identity was not known, was thought to be in his 50s, according to Yuba City police Sgt. Steve Thornton. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 1998 Dodge four-wheel-drive pickup was traveling northbound on Gray Avenue, and the pedestrian was crossing the street westbound, according to Thornton. The accident occurred at 5:20 p.m.

"I was texting and I heard something that sounded like an accident," said Ken Hatchett of Yuba City, who was walking nearby at the time of the accident. "Right when I heard the impact, I looked up and that guy got hit," added Hatchett, pointing to the intersection where the crash occurred.

Emergency personnel blocked off northbound Gray Avenue between Spiva and Louise avenues while they investigated the accident scene.

Thornton said that alcohol was not thought to be a factor in the accident.
