Letter: Jailed border agents deserve medals
Comments 0 | Recommend 0The editorial in the Appeal-Democrat Aug. 5, "Border Patrol agents deserve jail, but not this," only supports more illegal immigrant criminal activity, such has been increasing in the past few years in the Yuba-Sutter area.
Your conclusion, "we'd therefore support a commutation of their sentences, but certainly not a pardon."
I and many others believe the border agents should have been given a medal.
In reaching your conclusion, you quote the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution: "does not permit officers to shoot a feeling suspect unless the suspect poses a threat to the physical safety of the officers or the public."
It is my understanding that the prosecution held back information that would have supported U.S. Border Agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean.
The U.S. Government gave the drug smuggler immunity to testify against the agents. The U.S. Government should have given the Border Agents Ramos and Compean immunity to testify against the smuggler and prosecute the drug smuggler in absenteeism.
Your caption: "In reality, this issue doesn't have much to say about immigration policy, although it touches on the topic of mandatory minimum sentences," is wrong. The issue is: the press, U.S. citizens and legal immigrants need to support our U.S. Border Agents.
Take a poll, Appeal-Democrat.
