Letter: American Legion encourages students
The American Legion for many years has provided a place for local high school students to apply for scholarships worth up to $18,000.
Sadly, it seems as our schools no longer teach today's youth about our Constitution, which is the American Legion's steppingstone for a student to earn a scholarship.
The process includes a student picking a specific topic related to the Constitution and giving an eight- to 10-minute speech - that's all.
So why are the students not applying for these contests which all high schools are informed of? The American Legion High School Oratorical takes place every year at around the same time (winter); again this a great opportunity for all high school students to hone their public speaking skills.
Students who do not get information from their schools can reach out to any American Legion post in their area for any information. Call 742-0646 or 315-3768 or call your area's American Legion Post.
