Letter: ‘Titans' plunder families' assets

I was born in 1949 to a recently returned WWII Navy vet who was able to finance his college education through the G.I. Bill. This one government program alone enabled hundreds of thousands of veterans to begin their assent into the middle class. My dad became a music teacher, my mother, a third-grade teacher. They were able to purchase a home, provide for six children and see each of them attain a college degree. They had achieved the "American Dream." Sadly, that dream is slipping into obscurity.

The advent of deregulation, wholesale outsourcing of American jobs, unfair tax policies favoring the rich, union demonization, and poor enforcement of consumer and environmental protection laws gave megacorporations, big banks, credit card companies, stock market gamblers and monolithic health care insurers free reign to plunder the American public's meager assets. These captains of industry give no thought to the devastating effects of their policies on millions of American families but care only for the bottom line.

And it continues unabated.

I would venture to guess that the vast majority of people in this country has a bottom line as well. When we all agree on what that is, the titans on Wall Street will tremble in their collective Guccis.
