Hispanic Chamber honors local business leaders

Food, entertainment and recognition filled all three rings of the North Valley Hispanic Chamber of Commerce circus on Friday at the Colusa Casino Resort.

Members of the business community and leaders from Colusa and the Yuba-Sutter area gathered for the second annual gala to honor businessmen and women and ambassadors for the community.

The member-funded organization represents both Hispanic and non-Hispanic businesses within a 50-mile radius of Yuba City, which includes all of Colusa County, Live Oak and a portion of the Woodland area.

Yuba City Mayor Kash Gill, a two-term Yuba-Sutter Chamber of Commerce chairman, commended the Hispanic Chamber for successfully fulfilling its dual mission.

"The North Valley Chamber of Commerce works very hard, not only to advance Hispanic businesses in the area, but to assist all businesses to reach the Hispanic consumer market," Gill said.

During the event, North Valley directors announced the 2010 recipients of its awards.

The awards included Amigo (Businessman of the Year), Amiga (Businesswoman of the Year), the Dennis Chavez Award (Public Servant of the Year), Cesar Chavez Award (Community Volunteer), Delores Huerta, Ambassador of the Year and President's Award.

Terri Rivera, who founded the Eleanor Azevedo Memorial Fund Youth Empowerment Service in Colusa to help children pay for sports and other activities, won the Delores Huerta Award, named after the Mexican-American farm worker who co-founded the National Farm Workers Association.

Col. Kim Rempp, operator of Yellow Ribbon Thrift Store, who won the Cesar Chavez award for demonstrating significant contributions to both the Hispanic community and North Valley community as a whole, said receiving the award was inspiring.

"It gives me motivation to move on a do more for our community," Rempp said.

Other award recipients included Angel Reynoso, State Farm Insurance, Businessman of the Year/Amigo Award; Margaret Fernandez, The Plus Group, Inc., Businesswoman of the Year/Amiga Award; Rob Klotz, Vice-mayor Live Oak, Dennis Chavez Award; Rosemary Avila, Optimum Zendejas Home Loans, Ambassador of the Year Award; and David Perez, Yuba Community College District, Jaime Escalante Award.

North Valley President Angel Diaz presented Gabrial Singh of Live Oak with the President's Award for distinguished service to the community.
