Corning High School homecoming queen, Mr. Cardinal crowned

A royal court will be recognized Friday at Corning High School.

And right in the middle of basketball games.

This week, the school is celebrating Winter Homecoming, culminating Friday with the crowning of Homecoming Queen Marisa Vinson and the selection of Mr. Cardinal during the boys varsity basketball game.

Last week, the students voted Vinson and the her court into royal status following a series of skits performed by girl's competing for the title.

Vinson is the 17-year-old daughter of Bob and Sheryl Vinson. She is a senior who participates in softball, field hockey and basketball, and is a spirit leader. Her grade point average is 3.8. Vinson aspires for a career in physical therapy.

The homecoming queen's escort is 18-year-old senior Colby Rutledge, the son of Frank and Carol Rutledge. His grade point average is 3.71 and he plays football and basketball.

Junior Princess is Monique Davis, 16, the daughter of Scott and Linda Davis. She is involved in Interact, California Scholarship Federation and plays on the varsity tennis team. Davis holds a 4.0 grade point average.

Her escort is junior Cody Hiller, the 16-year-old son of Keith and Jennifer Hiller. Holding a 3.3 grade point average, Hiller has plans to join the Marines following high school graduation.

Sofi Oliverez, 15, is the Sophomore Princess. She is the daughter of Annie Oliverez and holds a 3.0 grade point average. Oliverez is involved in volleyball, basketball, softball and is a spirit leader.

Noe Garcia is her escort. He is the son of Efrain Garcia and Ana Alvarado, and holds a 3.14 grade point average.

The Freshman Princess is Emily Delgado, the 14-year-old daughter of Esteban and Herminia Delgado. She is a Corning High cheerleader who plays in the Cardinal Band and holds a 3.43 grade point average. Her escort is 15-year-old Rickey Figueroa, the son of Rosa Gonzalez and Macario Figueroa. Friday's homecoming activities begin at 3:30 p.m. at the high school's north gym with the junior varsity girls basketball game, followed by the junior varsity boys basketball game.

The varsity girls basketball game starts at 6:30 p.m., which will be followed by a performance by the Mr. Cardinal nominees. After the performance, Mr. Congeniality, Mr. Irresistible and Mr. Cardinal will be crowned.

Just before the varsity boys basketball game starts at 8 p.m., the Cardinal Drill Team will perform.

During the varsity game halftime, the Homecoming Queen coronation will take place.

A Cardinal Sweetheart Dance for high school students will be begin in the south gym at 10 p.m.
