Volunteer of the Week Betty Mitchell is proud to wear the S.T.A.R.S. uniform.

Betty Mitchell

• Name: Betty Mitchell

• Age: 85

• Family: Three daughters, one son

• City of residence: Loma Rica

• Occupation: Worked with Bell Company for 25 years

• How long have you lived in the Yuba-Sutter area? A longtime Yuba-Sutter resident, I was born in Sutter County and have also lived in Sacramento, Clovis and Fairfield.

• Hobbies, interests: Television, Appeal-Democrat and my son's family's dogs, cats, rooster and hens

• For what groups do you volunteer? Yuba County Sheriff's Team of Active Residents, or S.T.A.R.S since 1999. I've served well more than 2,000 hours — we have to put in 16 hours a month and (since Sept. 16) I already have 28 hours for September. You can work in the courthouse, do patrols — we were recently at the boat races at Lake Francis. I am so proud of this uniform.

As a member of Loma Rica Community Church, I help when I'm needed, fixing coffee in the morning, serving communion.

In the past, I was with the Yuba-Sutter Gleaners for eight years.

Volunteering with the S.T.A.R.S. makes me feel important. Before volunteering I was kind of a wallflower, but I have come out a bit.

• How do you fit it into your schedule? It works out. Keeping active keeps me feeling young and not old. I also enjoy helping people.

• Words of advice: Go to the courthouse and get a pamphlet about the S.T.A.R.S.

• Quote: "There's people who volunteer every day and you don't hear about it."

Volunteer of the Week runs Tuesdays on the Local page. To submit the name of a volunteer to be featured, contact Leticia Gutierrez, Community Editor, at lgutierrez@appeal-democrat.com or call 741-2400.
