• Occupation: Retired as a civil engineer at Beale Air Force Base after 21 years of service.
• How long have you lived in the Yuba-Sutter area? Since 1960
• Hobbies, interests: I play golf. And I started square dancing in 1963 with a class taught by Jack Murtha. The next year I went back and helped him start another group. Then I became a caller and started my first club at Beale in 1965.
• For what groups do you volunteer? The Yuba County Sheriff's Team of Active Residents, STARs, for the past 13 years, working two days a week and being called in when others can't make it. As of June I had more than 8,600 hours.
Though I was in the hospital for a few months recently, I'm back. I love my work — we take the cars that are broken down to the vendors to get them fixed. I'm so glad I found this because it's been the best thing in the world.
When I worked back east, in Dunkirk, N.Y., I was a coach and manager in Little League.
I belong to the American Legion.
If I couldn't volunteer with the STARS, I'd find something to do. As long as I'm alive I'll find something to do.
• How do you fit it into your schedule? I work half days two days a week.
• Words of advice: You have to watch how much volunteer time you can afford. It takes time and you have to space it out.
