Letter: Exercising rights in democratic nation

I am responding to Bob Bush’s July 24 letter to the editor, “Time to upgrade Hillcrest Water.” I am one of the “group of about 20” citizens of Yuba City that is going door-to-door giving Hillcrest water users an opportunity to vote yes or no on the City Council’s proposal to change our Yuba City groundwater system to our Yuba City surface water system.

Mr. Bush ends his letter with two questions: Why does this small group want the city’s proposal rejected? What is their hidden agenda? Bob, the hidden agenda is called democracy. Just in case you have forgotten what that word means, there is a book, the dictionary, that may refresh your memory: a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them.

I’m not aware of a group conspiracy within those of us who are giving up our free time to allow our neighbors the opportunity to vote yes or no on the city’s water proposal. However, I am wondering if Mr. Bush has a hidden agenda. Bob, if you really are thinking about running for mayor, demonizing future voters is not a good strategy.
