Letter: Give Darwin Award to suicide bombers

Inept terrorists like Richard Reid (shoe bomber) and Farouk Abdulmutallab (underwear bomber) do provide a service by pointing out gaps in our airport screening process. If they had been successful, planes would have gone down without Homeland Security getting a fix on the tactics used — and certainly more competent terrorists would have later used the same methods. Frightening thought.

For their efforts, I would think they would qualify for the Darwin Award, which is given posthumously to an individual who is killed in the most incredibly stupid way. It is primarily an award for prevention of human gene-pool contamination. If Mr. Reid and Mr. Abdulmutallab are incarcerated for life, they will eliminate themselves from the gene pool. That being beneficial to mankind, it should qualify them for the award. In fact all suicide bombers should be offered the award. I can't think of a more stupid death.

Knowing us, Farouk is undoubtedly enjoying the best in Western medicine — skin grafts and a morphine drip for pain. We certainly wouldn't want him to suffer. Loving our enemies is definitely a challenge at times.
