Olivehurst resident Francis "Frank" J. Bowes is celebrating his 85th birthday today with dinner with his family.

Born Jan. 19, 1928, in Barker, N.Y., he has been a Yuba-Sutter resident for 42 years.

He retired in 1967 as a US Air Force staff sergeant after 18 years and is a veteran of the Korean War, serving during the Chinese spring offensive in 1951.

Later he worked as an equipment operator for Laidlaw in the Yuba-Sutter area for 20 years.

A lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4095, he served as all state commander in 1985 and '86.

He enjoys taking morning bicycle rides around town.

His family includes his wife of 60 years, Kathryn; four children, Mary Bowes and Michael Bowes, both of Olivehurst, Robert Bowes of East Linda and Susan Ladino of Hyannis, Mass.; and one grandson.
