Letter: 'Diabetics' letter found disparaging
I am writing in response to Royce J. Miller's Nov. 6 letter to the editor, "Diabetics face discrimination."
Regarding diabetes vs. cancer, Miller wrote, "everybody loves boobies and nobody loves feet." I am certain the intention was not to offend anyone; however, it was a disparaging remark - particularly because the fact is, one out of every seven women will have breast cancer.
In addition, breast cancer is only one of the many cancers that will take thousands of lives every year. Diabetes on the other hand, is a controllable disease and death is not always imminent, unless you do not have your insulin. Men and women with cancer, on or off of treatment, have daily concerns about reoccurrence. Both diseases can be life threatening, and fund raising for new treatments and cures are equally important.
I am hard pressed to believe that Cancer Awareness Month in October has a negative effect on Diabetes Awareness Month in November. The letter to the editor could have been better well served by thanking all the financial contributors, event planners, and volunteers who have made it possible for the research and advancement in medicine for both of these critical diseases. One day there will be a cure for both.
