Check fraud suspect held in Yuba City

An Olivehurst man was arrested Tuesday after Yuba City police said they discovered evidence of check and identification fraud.

Inside his vehicle, Justin L. Cannon also had hashish, narcotics and computer equipment believed to be linked to the alleged fraud, police said.

"We believe the identity theft Cannon was involved in was extensive," police spokeswoman Shawna Pavey said.

Officers believe some of the checks found on Cannon were stolen, while others were forged.

Police also found stolen mail in the vehicle, Pavey said.

US Postal Service inspectors have joined the investigation to look into the alleged mail theft.

Cannon 33, was booked into the Sutter County Jail on suspicion of forgery, burglary, identity theft, receiving stolen property, making fictitious checks, possession of forged notes, false impersonation, possession of concentrated cannabis and possession of a controlled substance.

Pavey said Cannon tried to return something to the Office Depot on Harter Parkway around 11:15 a.m. which he had purchased a week earlier using a bogus check.

"Employees were able to provide a description of the vehicle," Pavey said.

Officers spotted Cannon's vehicle a short time later a few blocks away and took him to jail.
