More than 3,000 items sent to KCRA Kids Can

Students at Lindhurst High School in Olivehurst recently participated in the KCRA 3 Kids Can Food Drive sponsored by KCRA Channel 3 in Sacramento.

Setting up a friendly competition between classrooms, during the food drive a daily tally for each room was read each morning as part of the home room announcements.

"The spirit, dedication and fun in which the kids collected the cans is proof that 'kids really can,'" LHS student support specialist Carla Beckett said in an email.

"I can't tell you how much fun it was to see the kids carrying their cans in boxes, bags, in their hands to (English department chair and activities director Stephanie) Peterson's room every morning for the count," Beckett said.

In the final count, LHS students collected more than 3,000 cans of food. Joe Santos' classes finished in first place with 837 cans. Wendy Fritzinger's classes finished in second place with 785 cans, and Sarah Moffit's classes finished in third place with 413 cans.

"This was a wonderful project for the students. When the truck came to pick up the boxes, kids were eagerly putting boxes in — almost filling whole the truck," Beckett said. "When it comes to helping their community, (Lindhurst High School students) do it with heart, no matter the reason."
