Cavemen on deck for 'Outfield'
Magic Theatre play a parody of Costner film 'Field of Dreams' by adding cavemen
In the film "Field of Dreams," Kevin Costner plays a man who resurrects legendary baseball players.
The Magic Theatre's "Cavemen in the Outfield" takes the premise of the 1989 film and turns all the resurrected baseball players into cavemen.
"Cavemen in the Outfield" begins Saturday.
"I decided to parody 'Field of Dreams' because it's probably my favorite movie," said the play's writer and director, John Trent. "I really loved the message about pursuing your dreams no matter how crazy they are. I liked the idea of pursuing them."
The idea to make all the baseball players cavemen — instead of doing a straight adaptation of "Field of Dreams" with a younger cast — was "just for the humor aspect of seeing cavemen play baseball," Trent said.
As a parody of "Field of Dreams," "Cavemen in the Outfield" largely uses the same plot: Lunk (Jeff Graham) is working in his wife's flowerbed, when he hears a mysterious voice telling him, "If you build it, he will come."
Following the suggestion from the mysterious voice, Lunk builds a rockball field in the flowerbed, which resurrects famous rockball players like Shoeless Rock Jackson (Brandon Graham), who play rockball on the former flowerbed.
The cast for "Cavemen in the Outfield" also includes Pamela Givans as Meck, Christian Givans as Nik, Adam Steinke as Nak, Joe Moye as Krog and Jeremy Trent as the mysterious voice.
"For those familiar with the movie, they'll get a laugh out of the jokes about the movie," Trent said. "For those who don't know the movie, they'll get a good message about pursuing one's dreams."
"Cavemen in the Outfield" runs to Aug. 1.
