Seniors enjoy a bit of Christmas spirit

So many Corning seniors gathered on Friday to enjoy a Christmas party at the Senior Center the room was nearly overflowing.

Maybe it was because of the great holiday feast, but more likely it was because Santa Claus was dropping by for a visit.

Whatever the reason for the large turnout, the center looked like Santa's elves had joined him from the North Pole as nearly everyone was decked out in red and green and wearing a red Santa hat.

Never too old for a Christmas wish list, many a senior took a turn on St. Nick's lap, whispering in his ear just like they did when young tots.

Delores May, a regular at the center, said when a little girl she lived in a Christian home orphanage in Nebraska.

"Each year the people in the town would pick each one of us kids names and bring us a gift for Christmas," she recalled.

Eleanor Oldfield said she remembers growing up in Chicago and there was a lot of snow at Christmas.

"We had a tree and were very thankful for what we had because we didn't get much," she said. "We would go to church and sing in the Christmas play." Whatever the youthful memory, all of the seniors agreed that you are never too old or too young to enjoy Christmas with friends and family.
