Magic Theater has 'A Hillbilly Christmas'
"A Christmas Carol" is a staple of the holiday season, performed in a multitude of venues.
In "A Hillbilly Christmas," Dickens' classic is performed in the Ozarks.
The Magic Theater will perform "A Hillbilly Christmas" beginning today and running to Dec. 20.
As the title suggests, the play is about the celebration of Christmas by hillbillies, said the play's director, John Trent. On Christmas Eve in the Ozarks, the Widow Hinckley (played by Betsy Johnson) brings bad-tempered mountaineer Joshua Frunheiser (Jeff Graham) a Christmas tree.
But Joshua hates Christmas, so Hirman Hinckley (Brandon Graham) and Cora Belle Hinckley (Sydney Johnson) put on a mountaineer version of "A Christmas Carol" to change Joshua's mind.
"I saw the title on the Internet about a year and a half ago, and I bought a copy (of the script) and thought the area would like the play," Trent said. "People who have seen it have enjoyed it."
Rounding out the cast are Courtney Williams as Lizzie Ann, Holly Trent as Minnie Su and Kevin Trent as Ozzie.
"It's perfect for this time of year," Trent said of the play. "It's a good time, and you'll have a good laugh."
