Letter: BMXers need space, too
In Yuba City, there is only a skate park. There is not a park for BMX bike riding, which is a competitive sport that started in San Diego in 1975.
It has become a very popular sport and there are many riders in Yuba City. Because this sport requires a concrete park, the only facility available is at Sam Brannan Park. As a teenager I who has friends who ride, I'm aware of the issue.
One big disadvantage with living in a small community like Yuba City is that there are not enough structured activities for its youth.
Research states that after-school programs and structured activities have a positive impact on the youth. Kids who are involved in positive activities make healthier choices. They are more likely to attend school, stay on track, stay safe and have a better self-concept.
Yuba City can do something about this. We could allow bikes at the current skate park, which would also eliminate the bike ticketing issue. Or we could build a separate bike park. I'm ready to do whatever I can to help. Keeping our youth involved has always been an issue for our city and it's time we looked at some solutions.
