Teens talk Facebook with Yuba City City Council

Older met younger on Tuesday at River Valley High School when the Yuba City City Council held its first meeting at the campus — and learned how Facebook is fading, Roseville is where teens travel for fun and the PA system still matters.

Students from a leadership class attended the meeting in the school library and spoke about the need for the city to get the word out about additions like the new Feather River Parkway that will be dedicated April 27.

"There should be an easier way for teens to get all this information," student Amanveer Sangha, 17, suggested.

Facebook is not the way, several students added, because that social media lost steam for teens when their parents began using it.

Twitter, Instagram or even that standby high school public address system would work, students said.

When Mayor John Buckland asked them what they did for fun, one teen said they go outside Yuba City. Roseville, with attractions including the Galleria mall and SunSplash waterpark, ranked high in the region, students said.

Tad Crother, 17, who is running unopposed for student body president, said after the City Council meeting that he was impressed by the councilmen's interest in students' views.

"It was great," he said. "They asked us what we thought."

Student Gurveen Sandhu,18, agreed.

"It was actually really cool," she said. "They were really open to what we had to say."

Buckland said he was impressed with the students.

"They were engaged," he said. "They want to be part of the future."

When one student suggested that a large open field at the Yuba-Sutter Fairgrounds might work as the site of a drive-in movie theater, the mayor joked, "You guys are going really retro."

Councilman Tej Maan, after students noted Facebook is not how teens communicate, joked how he and other councilmen are "just learning about" the social media website.

Brad McIntire, director of parks and recreation for Yuba City, said there are plans to have the council meet at Yuba City High School as well.
