College celebrates first anniversary

The Woodland Community College — Colusa County outreach facility is celebrating its first-year anniversary today in Williams.

A reception is set from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at 99 Ella St.

Kohl's sponsors scholarships

Kohl's Department Stores will be accepting nominations for outstanding young volunteers for its 2012 scholarship program starting Wednesday and continuing to Feb. 15.

Nominations for children and youths ages 6 to 18 years can be submitted at kohlskids.com.

Nominators must be at least 21 years old.

Prizes include a $50 Kohl's gift card for two nominees from each of the company's more than 1,100 stores; regional scholarships worth $1,000; and a total of $10,000 in scholarships for the 10 national winners.

The company is also donating $1,000 to a nonprofit organization on behalf of each national winner.

The Kohl's Cares Scholarship Program began in 2001 and has awarded more than $3 million.

Yuba-Sutter

Cheer squads to compete in Vegas

Members of the Twin Cities Blazers cheerleading group are competing in the Jamz National Competition this weekend in Las Vegas.

Local teams scheduled to compete are the Mighty Mights on Friday; Jr. Pee Wee on Saturday; and the Midgets on Monday.

The 50 cheerleaders will be accompanied by their parents and coach.

The Twin Cities Blazers qualified for the national event during competitions in October in Antioch.

Live Oak

Kindergarten registration open

Kindergarten registration at Luther Elementary School for fall 2012 begins Feb. 16 in the school's cafeteria in Live Oak.

Children must have been born on or before Nov. 1, 2007.

Registration on the first day is from 3 to 5 p.m., with all kindergarten children registered that day receiving a backpack.

Registration continues from 1 to 4 p.m. weekdays through March 2 in the school office.

Information required for registration includes a birth certificate, proof of immunizations and proof of residency.

Marysville

Prom show seeks vendors

Vendor and ad spaces are available for the second Annual Prom Expo and Fashion Show set in February at the Allyn Scott Youth and Community Center in Marysville.

Costs are $25 for vendor space and $15 to $50 for ad space in the event program. Registration ends Feb. 20.

The event is set at 6 p.m. Feb. 25 at 1830 B St., with local high school students modeling gowns and tuxedoes.

Marysville

After-school program open

Membership applications for 2012 are being accepted for the Allyn Scott Youth and Community Center's drop-in after-school program for students in grades third to 12th.

All 2011 memberships must be renewed.

The youth center, at 1830 B St. in Marysville, is open from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Activities include daily homework help, healthy snacks and recreation, such as crafts and roller skating.

Kim earns business degree

Vitaliy Kim of Yuba City graduated with a bachelor's degree in business administration in December from Southwestern College.

Almost 200 students are eligible to participate in commencement exercises May 6 in Winfield, Kan.

The private college is affiliated with the United Methodist Church.

Thurman named to dean's list

Chanell Alis Thurman of Yuba City was named to the fall 2011 dean's list at the University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg campus.

The university, founded in 1910, is a comprehensive doctoral and research-extensive school.

Kiwanis award Hope of America

Four eighth-grade students received the Hope of America Awards presented by the Kiwanis Club of Yuba City during ceremonies Jan. 19 at the Bonanza Convention Center in Yuba City.

Honored were:

• Madison Goss of Marcum-Illinois School

• Aana Amin of Barry School

• Shelby Smith of Central Gaither School

• Riley Gruenthal of Nuestro School.

Students were selected by their teachers for the 14th annual event.
