YUBA COLLEGE BASKETBALL: 49ers get their revenge
The Yuba College men's basketball team exacted some revenge on Friday night.
After losing to American River College 73-65 at home on Dec. 1, the 49ers returned the favor with a 102-55 shellacking of the Beavers at the Kris Kringle Tournament in Santa Rosa.
"We played with intensity and were hungry tonight," said Yuba College coach Doug Cornelius. "They were very patient and shared the ball — it reminded me of last year's team. It was nice to see."
Every player on the Yuba College roster scored in the win.
Sophomore Yev Dyachenko buried six 3-pointers, including five in a row, as he dropped in a team-high 20 points for the 49ers (6-5). Jaysen Williams put up 14 points to go with 11 rebounds.
Chris Smith tacked on 16 points, Gary Melvin scored 14 points and Darrell Polee added 11 points to round out the double-figure scorers for the Niners.
Despite just scoring four points, sophomore guard Achoki Moikobu played his "best game of the season" in the eyes of Cornelius.
"He was unselfish to a fault," Cornelius said. "He played great defense, passed the ball well, he was just a great team guy tonight."
Moikobu and point guard Akachi Okugo both dished out seven assists.
The 49ers face host Santa Rosa Junior College tonight in a rematch of last season's CCCAA Northern California Final, which Yuba won to advance to the state Final Four. Santa Rosa is the No. 5 team in the state.
