Letter: College delays vet's aspirations

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

I am a 25-year-old Yuba College student and an aspiring medical doctor. Once I complete my core classes at Yuba College I plan to continue my education at U.C. Davis.

I am a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and I served my country for a little over four years. During that time I provided support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom and helped serve the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The cancellation of summer session prolongs my educational goal, and there is no provision for veterans who depend on their GI Bill to cover expenses.

Furthermore, board member Brent Hastey would suggest I drive to another college. What? This is our college. This is our community!! Why should I be forced to drive to Butte, Sierra, or Sac City? Is this because those colleges planned better for fiscal emergencies and are still offering full programs? If so, this is not a state crisis but a local crisis, and I would go so far as to say a gross mismanagement at the expense of the students of Yuba College.

PAY HIKE?
What should the board of trustees do with the proposed $29,282 pay raise for Chancellor Nicki Harrington?
Rescind it. Now is not the time.
Give it to her. She should be compensated fairly and competitively.
