Our View: Choose a new comic strip

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

Let the voting begin.

Starting today, readers can vote online for a new comic strip to grace the Appeal-Democrat comics page.

The new strip will replace "For Better or For Worse," which is moving to the "classic comics" section on the daily Features page. FBorFW cartoonist Lynn Johnston is revisiting old story lines, so there was some consideration to dropping the strip. But A-D readers requested it remain, so the compromise was struck.

Readers also indicated they desired a new comic strip with family themes: seems the paper apparently publishes enough comics featuring sarcastic animals and off-beat humor. So the 10 comics awaiting your vote focus on the humor found in relationships with family and friends. The choices range from the well-established "Drabble" and "Luann" to the newer offerings "Between Friends" and "Home and Away."

Here's what you do: log on to www.appeal-democrat.com and go to the promotions section on the home page. Click on the comics promo to see two weeks' worth of the 10 comics. Vote for your favorite one. Deadline for voting is Oct. 19. Results will be published on Sunday, Oct. 28.

BACK TO SCHOOL?
The new GI Bill benefits vary from state to state depending on tuition and fees, replacing the previous flat stipend, and also includes a formula for private college assistance. Do you agree with this approach?
Yes, it allows veterans more choices of where to attend college.
I like it, but the private school policy is flawed in California.
I think it's too generous.
No, it pits states against each other.
