Briefs: Man arrested with marijuana

A routine traffic stop ended Wednesday in Wheatland with a Grass Valley man behind bars accused of felony marijuana possession, the Wheatland Police Department reported.

John P. Stokley, 60, was booked into the Yuba County Jail on suspicion of possession of marijuana for sale and transporting marijuana.

Police stopped Stokley around 1 p.m. at Spenceville Road and Jasper Lane.

Officers "could immediately smell the odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle," Chief Ally Wightman said in a press release.

Police found about seven pounds of marijuana and a large, but undisclosed, amount of cash inside, Wightman said, and took Stokley into custody.

Stokley was not in custody Thursday night, according to jail records.

Deadline for land measure

Sutter County property owners who keep their land out of development under the Williamson Act have until Dec. 11 to either opt out of the program or stay in under new terms.

The Williamson Act gives property owners incentive to keep their land from being developed, and subsequent laws help local governments replace a portion of the property tax lost from such properties.

After years of reimbursing the taxes to counties at lower rates because of budget deficits, state officials passed a law last year to change Williamson Act contracts and allow counties to collect some of the lost tax revenue. Under the change, property owners will see a 10-percent reduction in the annual tax break and be enrolled for nine years if they don't opt out.

Commission sets workshop

Funding applications are available in two categories, licensed child care providers and community partners, through the Sutter County Children and Families Commission.

A mandatory workshop is at 6 p.m. Tuesday at New Earth Market's Harvest Room, 1475 Tharp Road, Yuba City.

Applications, available at suttercounty.org/cfc, are due by noon Dec. 21.

Museum fundraiser planned

Tickets are available for the annual Trees and Traditions fundraiser gala for the Community Memorial Museum of Sutter County.

Featuring small decorated Christmas trees donated by local businesses, the event is from 5 p.m.-8 p.m. Dec. 1 at the museum, 1333 Butte House Road, Yuba City.

A silent and live auction are part of the festivities, along with champagne and wine, hors d'oeuvres and dessert and music by the MARKS Ensemble.

The museum's main tree will be decorated in a Sutter Buttes theme.

Characters in costume, food and carolers are part of the annual Hometown Christmas at the Forbestown Museum's replica of a gold rush town.

Vendors and crafters are also featured at the holiday celebration.

Theater donates to Sandy relief

Theater patrons donated $710 for the American Red Cross during the last three performances of "Fiddler on the Roof" at the Acting Company in Yuba City.

The money raised is for the Red Cross' Superstorm Sandy relief efforts.

Sutter County

Officials donate turkeys to families

County and state officials, with the Golden State Water Co., have donated 625 turkeys to families in need in Sutter County during the company's annual Operation Gobble service program.

Officials taking part included all five Sutter County supervisors, county Administrator Stephanie Larson, former state Sen. Doug LaMalfa and state Sen. Jim Nielsen.

Golden State Water Co. is delivering more than 7,000 turkeys to families in its service territory that includes 10 counties.

The company has distributed turkeys to families in need since 1990.
