Letter: Prosecution best way to fight crime

It's not rocket science. The local politicians can't figure out what to do about violent crime in town? I have one word for you: prosecute.

You don't need more officers on the street. You don't need more administrators in the department. You don't need a special committee or task force. You don't need more money.

You need to follow the laws on the books and prosecute to the furthest present law will allow.

City officials can make criminal threats in public meetings in front of witnesses. Nothing. The proverbial ball is being dropped by those responsible for seeing that those who break the law and assault, threaten, slander, coerce, and intimidate witnesses, etc., are never prosecuted.

I have owned two businesses on both sides of the bridge. I am even a former Yuba-Sutter Chamber of Commerce ambassador. I have held offices, organized after-school programs, I pay taxes and abide by the law. I have been assaulted twice since moving to Yuba City 11 years ago.

One criminal broke the subsequent restraining order. The other made serious criminal threats. Neither one of them even went to court, despite my complaints and evidence. Why? Because it didn't happen to someone high enough up on the chain of command and they didn't kill me. Who cares about my safety?

You think your citizens are ho-hum about gangs? The short answer is we don't feel protected enough to get that involved. Public officials can make criminal threats in public and nothing is done. It all starts small before it gets lethal. But the small stuff is ignored.
