Letter: We are stewards of the Earth

I listened to Romney's acceptance speech (Republican convention) hoping to hear something new. He said he had a jobs plan to create 12 million "new" jobs.

This plan was based on "energy independence." I thought he meant alternative fuels and reusable energy. But, his plan to create "new" jobs is to increase "domestic oil drilling."

Drilling for oil and pumping gas are certainly not "new." Methinks, "energy independence" is just a euphemism, just a political correct way of deceiving us into allowing more offshore drilling.

As we know from the Exxon incident in the Gulf of Mexico offshore oil drilling is an accident waiting to happen.

He also said: "… Obama is changing the tide." That was a laugh line that went over the heads of the crowd — and mine. Then it dawned on me; he doesn't believe in "global warming." He will increase oil drilling/usage, thus increasing carbon emissions and "global warming.

The Republican playbook says man does not cause "global warming." However, we all acknowledge that global warming and warming of the global conveyer belt are measurable and happening.

The effects are evidenced by the change in the global weather patterns. And furthermore, it is irreversible. Ergo, if we err, we must err on the side of safety; i.e., maintain a zero sum environment.

As residents of the Earth, we are her stewards. As stewards of our home, would we allow it to be destroyed? If Romney is voted in as president, he becomes the "steward in chief" of the Earth.

That is ominous. This is the only Earth we have.
