Bus drivers' records honored

Eight school bus drivers in Colusa County were recently recognized for their safety records by the California Highway Patrol.

"School bus drivers are unsung heroes who are entrusted with the safety of our children on a daily basis," CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow said in a statement. "Please be sure to thank these individuals if you or your child benefits from their services."

CHP commander Lt. James Epperson and Officer John Waggoner Jr., both of the Williams office, presented the safety awards to the drivers in five school districts on Dec. 18.

In addition to their driving skills, drivers must also learn how to inspect a bus and make sure that all equipment works.

Following initial school bus driver training by the California Department of Education, the CHP tests and recertifies school bus drivers, and the Department of Motor Vehicles licenses the drivers.

They also learn how to deal with the students, and often work with parents and staff.
