DUI checkpoint planned Friday in Marysville

A drunken driving checkpoint is planned Friday in Marysville as part of a statewide law enforcement crackdown over the holiday season.

Last weekend, officers with the Avoid the 9 Task Force arrested eight people for driving under the influence.

“If it rains (Friday) we won’t have a checkpoint, we’ll switch to saturation patrols,” Sgt. Chris Sachs said.

Impaired drivers face jail time, license suspension, insurance hikes, DUI classes, fines and other expenses that police said can exceed $10,000.

In 2010, 791 people died and more than 24,000 were injured in alcohol and drug-related collisions nationwide.

Program funding comes from the state traffic safety office through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
