Letter: Is outrage over AIG just a distraction?

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

As far as I have been able to learn, the AIG employees who earned the vilified bonuses entered into perfectly legal employment contracts and earned the money fairly.

The fact that the new majority owners (the U.S. government) do not like the contracts that were executed before they purchased their stock is irrelevant. If the government can make the lawful actions of this small group of citizens illegal after the fact and tax (confiscate) the compensation, what is to stop it from doing the same thing to teachers in Yuba City or nurses in Marysville?

If you say it can’t happen here, reread the history of Germany during the period 1930 - 1935. Another question: Is the outrage by our politicians deliberately intended to distract attention from their own blame for the AIG mess?

PAY HIKE?
What should the board of trustees do with the proposed $29,282 pay raise for Chancellor Nicki Harrington?
Rescind it. Now is not the time.
Give it to her. She should be compensated fairly and competitively.
