Biggs man seriously injured in single-vehicle accident

A Biggs man was severely injured Sunday evening after rolling his Dodge pickup on Mathews Lane, eventually landing in a ditch, authorities said.

Nicholas Evans, 36, was coming out of a turn and traveling south on Mathews Lane near Woodruff Lane at around 5:30 p.m. when his truck flipped over numerous times and crashed into the deep ditch, California Highway Patrol Officer Rick Barnett said.

When emergency personnel arrived, Evans had a restricted airway, Barnett said. However, there was very little bleeding.

"He wasn't breathing for a couple minutes," Barnett said.

Yuba City resident Vanessa Lee was taking photographs of the sunset when she saw the crash. She ran over to help Evans, who was choking with his seatbelt wrapped around his neck, she said.

Lee said she was able to call the authorities and stop another driver, who used a knife to cut Evans free.

"I said a little prayer, and I hope he's OK," she said.
