Superheroes come to Magic Theater with 'Fabulous Four'
Superhero movies have been all the rage as of late, but there are few plays falling into the genre.
Among that select few is "The Fabulous Four," an original play that the Magic Theatre will perform Saturdays through June 28 in Yuba City.
"The Fabulous Four" was written by Joe Moye, who also directs the play. "I got the idea while filling in (as teacher) for a theater class," he said. "There was no theme for the class, so I said, 'Let's write an original show.'"
Only one student, however, was interested — Julian Barkley-Brinson. Moye wrote "The Fabulous Four" with Barkley-Brinson and cast him in the play.
In the play, four children from two different families — Julian Barkley Brinson as Julian, Christian Torres as Dustin, Holly Trent as Julia and Cierra Crandall as Amelia — go camping. While there, they find rocks that give them superpowers such as controlling fire, manipulating time and making a person believe they're an animal.
"There's something for everybody (in this play)," Moye said. "There's humor for adults and kids, and there's a moral at the end that kids and parents need to understand each other."
"The Fabulous Four" is a good opportunity for kids to see live theater, he said, and it is timely with other superhero movies currently in theaters or coming soon.
"This is a genre that kids like being done as a live production. The kids will enjoy that."
