The River Valley High soccer team continued its playoff run with a 5-4 win in a penalty kicks shootout with Patterson.

PREP ROUNDUP: Falcons soccer continues historic run

Sutter volleyball wins BVL title

The River Valley High soccer team continued to make history on Thursday afternoon, but unlike Monday's 4-0 victory over El Camino, round two had the Falcons holding their breath.

The No. 6 Falcons played No. 3 Patterson to a 0-0 draw through extra time in the second round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III playoffs and needed penalty kicks to decide which team would advance.

After 110 minutes of soccer, the Falcons are moving on.

River Valley (11-2-3) bested Patterson 5-4 in penalty kicks to escape Stanislaus County with the upset victory.

Even after a monumental victory like this, coach Abel Franco kept the win in perspective.

"I told them we still have two more to go," Franco said. "It was very, very exciting and emotional. The best word to describe it is intense."

Hector Ramos, Castulo Carvajal, Jesus Garcia, Melad Rahim and Brandon Blancas all converted their penalty kicks for the Falcons, while goalkeeper Triston Montoya made a huge save to send RV to the next round.

The Falcons face No. 2 Rio Americano in the section semifinals on Wednesday in Sacramento. The winner of that game faces the winner of Manteca-Central Valley (Ceres) in the title game on Saturday, Nov. 10.

Franco also credited his defense for recording its second consecutive shutout in the playoffs. Garcia, Jose Mendoza and Alejandro Diaz were outstanding on the Falcons' back line.
