Letter: Fair should celebrate more cultures

I have lived in the Yuba-Sutter area all of my life. I personally think it is wonderful that we are a multicultural community. I myself come from a multicultural family: My father is Filipino and Spanish, my mom is Anglo-Saxon comprised of German, Irish, and Welsh. In our extended family, I have cousins and nephews who are a mix of African American and Hispanic.

I hope I don’t come across rude when I say that it frustrates me that the Yuba-Sutter Fair designates a day as La Familia Day. I do not feel that a community fair is the appropriate forum to designate an entire day to one ethnic group. I know it is meant to provide music and such of a specific culture to “others,” but my experience is nearly 100 percent of those in attendance are only Hispanic. Last year it seemed that 95 percent of the people were Hispanic.

Instead of designating one day for one culture, I propose a “multicultural” day instead. Each culture could provide music, food, and such of their specific culture in honor of our community’s cultural diversity. This would unite us all in an experience of the different flavors of our neighbors. This should also include our Caucasian friends of European dissent. Let us start a new tradition at the Yuba-Sutter Fair.
