Farmers market planned in Live Oak
WHEN: 4 p.m.-8 p.m. Thursdays, starting May 2.
WHERE: Broadwat Street between Pennington Road and Elm Street in Live Oak.
Farmers markets that operate at two Yuba City sites are expanding to Broadway — in Live Oak.
McCarty Enterprises of Yuba City will hold the market on Broadway Street between Pennington Road and Elm Street starting May 2.
Twalla McCarty said the new farmers market will promote the site with playbill-style promotions that emphasize the location along Broadway.
"We have a lot of really good support from the city of Live Oak and its merchants," McCarty said.
Mayor Steve Alvarado said Friday that the city is excited at the prospect of the market and its easy access off Highway 99.
"It's another way to bring the community together," he said. "It's a great idea."
City Manager Jim Goodwin said the market will "add to the richness of the community."
A report to the City Council, which on Wednesday approved a license agreement for the Live Oak Certified Farmers Market, noted McCarty visited with businesses on Broadway about the proposed street closure for the market.
McCarty said the intent is to create a quality community event with a focus on families and businesses.
She said the popularity of such markets stems in part from people's interest in the source of their food.
"It is a really good opportunity to get to know your local farmer," McCarty said.
McCarty Enterprises organizes the Yuba City Saturday Market at the Town Center near the water fountain and the Wednesday market along Plumas Street. McCarty said a new site is sought for the Wednesday market.
She said a location with greater visibility is needed and that several sites are under review.
