Letter: Bribe charges raise eyebrows

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

So the chairman of Soboba Indians is arrested for allegedly taking more than $250,000 in bribes, and then misreporting his income to the Feds? And he even filed a false tax return!

Now the feds are after him because of this paltry sum? I’ll be they have already spent more than that on their investigations.

Could this be an example of racial discrimination? This title seems to be used to explain a lot of things these days. I suspect most of our California government officials, and probably all of federal officials accept hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes (called “contributions, donations,” etc.), and have for years. They also file “false tax returns” (as in not listing total income, etc.), and pay very little in taxes. Examples: Tim Geithner, Tom Daschle, Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Dennis Hastert, and others.

We all saw how the feds slammed Geithner (Remember? He’s the fellow that didn’t pay any taxes for several years.  Said he “forgot” and that the tax code is so complex and confusing). Now he’s Treasury secretary and can go after Robert Salgado and us “little people!” It appears Daschel and the other boys just skated off into the sunset.

I oppose all tax cheats, but let’s be consistent. The FBI and the IRS should investigate all politicians who spend a billion-plus dollars for a job that pays about $160,000 a year, and in a few years they are worth millions. How does that pencil out?

PAY HIKE?
What should the board of trustees do with the proposed $29,282 pay raise for Chancellor Nicki Harrington?
Rescind it. Now is not the time.
Give it to her. She should be compensated fairly and competitively.
