'2012' yet another ridiculous Emmerich disaster film

Comments 0

That's enough, Roland Emmerich.

This week, the director of such cinematic masterpieces as "The Day After Tomorrow" and "Independence Day" is releasing "2012."

The film is, like the former two titles, a disaster film. With those two titles in mind, it's clear Emmerich has some weird fetish for destroying the world and its monuments.

Sure, the destruction of the White House in "Independence Day" is a great money shot and sold a lot of tickets. And "2012" promises to not only destroy the White House again — this time with a tidal wave carrying an airplane! — but also show Cailfornia itself falling into the ocean.

But if you have an interest in seeing this movie for its depiction of the world ending, then what does that say about how you view your own existence?

Let's not forget the ridiculous belief that propels this movie — the idea the world is going to end on Dec. 21, 2012, because the Mayan calendar says so.

If you believe that ... well, I can't help you.

The TV season has yet another casualty: ABC's "Eastwick" will not produce more episodes beyond its initial 13-episode order.

This is news to me, since I was only vaguely aware this show existed. Based on the low ratings (which contributed to its cancellation), I don't seem to be alone with that.

In other ABC news, the network is moving "Ugly Betty" from the Friday time slot of ratings death it currently occupies to 10 p.m. Wednesday.

This is good for "Ugly Betty," but doesn't answer the question of where to put "Lost" when it returns in January. The comedic "Ugly Betty" works better with ABC's surprisingly strong schedule of sitcoms than "Lost."

With low ratings reflecting "the forgotten" is an aptly named show, putting "Lost" at 10 p.m. Tuesday isn't a bad idea.

But, really, as long as DVRs exist and "Lost" has new episodes, who cares what day it airs?

TAX TIME?
Tax cuts implemented under the Bush administration are set to expire at the end of this year. What would you do?
I'd extend all the tax cuts at least until the economy recovers.
I'd extend all but for the wealthiest 2 percent of Americans, as President Obama proposes.
I'd let them all expire and revert back to the higher rates to help pay down the federal deficit.
