Fatal fire in Linda trailer park

The cause of an early morning fire that killed a 35-year-old Linda man on Wednesday remains unclear.

Shawn Seawater was found dead inside the trailer at the Casa Mia Mobile Home Park at 2019 Hammonton-Smartsville Road, the Yuba County Coroner's Office said.

Seawater's body was found inside a front room of the home. The cause of death was not clear.

Yuba County Undersheriff Jerry Read said an autopsy is scheduled today, but said it did not appear he had been burned. Foul play is not suspected.

Two family dogs also died in the blaze, authorities said.

No other injuries were reported.

Neighbor Ricardo Aguilar said he could see smoke billowing from the house on his way home and followed responding sheriff's vehicles to the scene.

"It was bad," Aguilar said. "There were flames coming out of the windows big time."

Aguilar stood outside with his wife, hoping that no one was trapped inside, he said.

Other neighbors tried to douse the fire with garden hoses.

Linda Fire Chief Rich Webb called the trailer "a total loss."

"The neighbors said (Seawater) was home, but the fire was so extensive they had to fight their way inside to search. And they did find the body, but he was already deceased," Webb said.

Webb said the fire, which started on the kitchen stove, is not considered suspicious.

"It was pretty tough to tell because there was so much damage," Webb said. "It appears he may have been cooking something."

Firefighters were called at about 12:20 a.m. About 20 firefighters responded from Linda and CalFire-Marysville. They remained at the scene until about 4:30 a.m.

Webb said the older model mobile home sustained about $20,000 to $30,000 in damage.

Family members declined comment.

Seawater's mother was working in San Jose, said Ernesto Calderon, the park manager.

Calderon said Seawater had moved into the home a few weeks earlier, but the family had been living there for more than six years.
