PREP ROUNDUP: East Nicolaus volleyball top Live Oak

RV beat Natomas: YC falls

It was a little bit of a roller coaster, but the East Nicolaus High volleyball team picked up a big win on Thursday night.

After winning their first two games 25-14, 27-25, the Spartans dropped games three and four by scores of 22-25, 10-25, before rallying for a victory in the decisive fifth game 15-6 over host Live Oak.

East Nicolaus improved to 2-1 in Sacramento Valley League play and 3-6 overall.

Brooke Essary amassed 10 kills and three aces for the Spartans, while Amanda Taylor dished out 10 assists and served six aces.

The Spartans' JV team fell 25-21, 23-25, 16-14, but received a strong effort from Jordan Bailey with four kills and four aces. Narissa Navarro had four kills and an ace.

No information was reported by Live Oak.

River Valley 3, Natomas 0

In Yuba City — The Falcons routed the Nighthawks at Falcon Gymnasium with a 25-6, 25-7, 25-6 Tri-County Conference victory.

Sierra Pedley was dominant from the service line with 12 aces.

Amrita Dale dished out eight assists and McKenzie Skyberg added six of her own to go with six digs.

Taylor Massengale recorded five kills to round out strong all-around showing by the Falcons (14-1, 2-0).

Pioneer 3, Yuba City 0

In Woodland — Maddie Collins recorded 10 blocks and nine kills, but the Honkers came up short in a 25-19, 25-20, 25-23 loss to the Patriots in a TCC match.

Jordan Coxe had seven blocks and six kills, and Ally Reece added three kills in the loss for Yuba City (7-8, 1-1).

The Honkers won the junior varsity match in three games by scores of 24-26, 25-9, 15-11.

Summer Williams tallied 11 kills and Caroline Van Ruiten and Alex MacElfresh combined for eight. Lora Solorio dished out 22 assists and served two aces in the win for Yuba City (7-3, 2-0).

Sutter 3, Corning 0

In Corning — Ava Payton tallied 11 kills and three aces and Erika Larsen added five kills and a pair of blocks to help lift the Huskies to a straight-set victory over the Cardinals.

Game scores were 25-18, 25-16, 25-15.

Mikayla Caldwell had six kills, Savannah Besso tallied 24 assists and Alix Russell chipped in with seven digs in the win for Sutter (13-7).

The Huskies also won the JV match 25-10, 21-25, 15-6.

Sara Stephenson had four kills and five aces, Taylor Cooper recorded four kills and Chloe Heape dished out 15 assists in the win.

Sutter took the freshman match 25-23, 25-19 as well.

New Life Christian 3, Global Youth 0

In Olivehurst — The Crusaders defended the home carpet with a resounding 25-7, 25-6, 25-8 win in Northern Pacific Athletic Conference play against the Bulldogs.

Kiley DeLozier tallied 17 service points with five kills and seven aces. Hannah Hruska also recorded 17 service points with five aces.

BOYS SOCCER

New Life Christian 3, Global Youth 1

In Olivehurst — Kobe Bancroft had a hat trick to lead the Crusaders over the Bulldogs in NPAC play.

Coach John Lewallen credited Sullivan Guy and Thomas Marquette with excellent play in the midfield, while Jordan Smith was solid at goalkeeper.

GIRLS TENNIS

Yuba City 6, Natomas 3

In Sacramento — The two-time TCC champions swept the singles matches to remain undefeated this season.

Hannah Poukish cruised 6-0, 6-0, Sophie Poukish rolled 6-2, 6-0 and Amanda Perry got by her opponent by a score of 6-4, 6-2.

Kristen Kent overcame a 3-6 loss in the first set to win 6-4 (10-5). Kendell Cheim rolled 6-1, 6-2 and Anisha Gill won 6-2, 6-2 for the Honkers, who improved to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the TCC.

Live Oak 9, Sutter 0

In Sutter — The Lions rolled in straight sets to top the Huskies and improve to 11-1 this season.

Lucero Topete, Jacque Mullen, Crystal Rodriguez, Aisha Khan and Lupe Chavez all won by scores of 6-0, 6-0, while Lindsey Hovey beat her opponent 6-1, 6-3.

Topete and Mullen teamed up to win 8-1, while teams of Rodriguez and Laura Vargas and Khan and Chavez each posted an 8-0 shutout.

JV VOLLEYBALL

River Valley 2, Faith Christian 1

In Yuba City — The Lions took the Falcons to the limit, but RV came away with a 12-25, 26-24, 17-15 victory at C.A. Summy Gymnasium.

Abby Maddalena was outstanding at the net for Faith Christian (8-1) and Emily Wolfgram was strong at the service line.

No statistics were reported by River Valley.

FROSH FOOTBALL

Sutter 21, Orland 0

In Sutter — Clay Carter tossed a 37-yard touchdown pass to Logan Wurm and added 4-yard TD run to help lift the Huskies past the Trojans in their BVL opener.

Jacob Gildea added a 5-yard touchdown run for Sutter, which improved to 9-1 with the victory.

Daniel Hale, Tanner Baroni, Brendon Nelson and Tony Buttacavoli each recovered a fumble and Jake Fitzgerald had an interception to lead Sutter's defense.

River Valley 47, Nevada Union 12

In Yuba City — Jared Wilson rushed for 190 yards on 10 carries and scored a pair of touchdowns and Donte Love added 95 yards on eight carries and scored twice to help lift RV to a win over the Miners at Falcon Stadium.

Avery Gould ran for a touchdown and completed 9 of 10 passes for 133 yards and another score for the Falcons, who improved to 3-1-1 with the win.

Kevin Batista, Austin Potts, Justin Todd and Aaron Benton each played well defensively, coach Phil McCaulley said.
