Education Briefs

More than $2,850.82 was raised during the Breton For Life Walk-a-thon at Brittan Elementary School in Sutter benefiting the Fremont Medical Center Pediatric Unit in Yuba City.

Held at the school, the event was organized by students of the California Junior Scholarship Federation and partnered with the Fremont-Rideout Foundation.

The entire student body participated, with 110 students raising funds through pledges.

Bryan Schroeder of Marysville recently received the Lt. Robert Merton Rawlins Merit Award from California State University, Chico.

The award is presented annually based on academic achievements, extracurricular activities and professional accomplishments.

Schroeder also received a $3,000 scholarship along with the award.

He earned a bachelor of science degree in computer science from CSU Chico. His current plans are to pursue a career in biomedical research and apply to the Medical Scientist Training Program.

The Junior Honkers Junior Midgets and Pee Wee cheer squads recently participated in the Nor Cal State Cheer Competition in Palo Cedro.

Junior Midgets placed in the runner-up position in the cheer category. The Pee Wee squad placed strongly.

This was the first time the squads were able to participate in several years.

Applications are now being accepted for the Capital Fellows Programs, sponsored by the Center for California Studies at California State University, Sacramento.

The programs offer first-hand experience in state governance and leadership, and the ability to participate in policymaking and development.

Applicants must have a bachelor's degree in any major and have an interest in state government and public service.

Fellows work 10 to 11 months as full-time staff members in the California State Assembly, Senate, Executive or Judicial branch of government.

Two Marysville Joint Unified School District teachers have posted project requests for classroom resources at DonorsChoose.org.

Ruth Atkins, 10th grade teacher at the Marysville Charter Academy for the Arts, posted "Fix It, Please! My Students Need Dictionaries!"

The project will help provide literature and writing resources for 100 students.

Eric Anderson, 12th grade teacher at Lindhurst High School, posted "Video History" to provide social science resources for 700 students.

DonorsChoose.org is an online education charity promoting submitted projects to prepare students for college and college-level work.

California State University, Sacramento, will showcase 150 items in its Wayne Thiebaud collection publicly for the first time from Dec. 3 to March 6.

A reception for the exhibit is slated from 5 to 8 p.m. Dec. 3 in the school's library gallery, 6000 J St., Sacramento.

Thiebaud, a university alum, is considered one of the most respected contemporary artists in the world.

The donated collection of his works was inspired by the Destination 2010 initiative created by university president Alexander Gonzalez.

Grandparents of students at Lincrest Elementary School can participate in classroom activities Monday and Tuesday.

Slated from 10 to 11:15 a.m., the annual event is a way to celebrate family during the Thanksgiving season.
