Yuba City man held in 2 pistol-whippings

A Yuba City man surrendered to police on Monday, a day after investigators said he pistol-whipped two men on Emerson Avenue.

Miguel M. Gonzalez, 52, of the 400 block of Franklin Road, is scheduled for arraignment today in Sutter County Superior Court on suspicion of assault with a firearm on a person, battery and making criminal threats, all felonies.

Police said Gonzalez fired a round from a small, semi-automatic pistol into the ground near the feet of a 33-year-old man, then pointed the gun at the man's head before striking him in the face and head with the butt of the gun.

"He asked the victim where a (mutual acquaintance) was," police spokeswoman Shawna Pavey said. "He said, 'Tell me where he is or I'll kill you.'"

Gonzalez then went into a home in the 400 block of Emerson Avenue and struck a 58-year-old man with the same gun.

"We have not determined why Mr. Gonzalez was looking for him," Pavey said.

Citing concerns for the safety of both men, police declined to release the names of the victims. Both men suffered minor injuries.

Gonzalez remains in custody without bail at the Sutter County Jail.
