PREP ROUNDUP: Gridley boys soccer opens playoffs with big win over Anderson

Despite being the No. 5 seed on Thursday, the Gridley High boys soccer team played like anything but an underdog.

The Bulldogs shut out No. 4 Anderson 4-0 on the road in the opening round of the Northern Section Division II playoffs.

Gridley (13-8-2) will face Butte View League foe Orland (the No. 1 seed) on Tuesday in Orland.

Rodrigo Olmos and Juan Velasquez scored two goals each to take care of the scoring for Gridley. Both of them had an assist as well.

Senior goalkeeper Alfredo Martinez recorded his sixth shutout of the season.

The Bulldog defense of David Gomez, Eusevio Cervantes, Alfredo Villegas, Austin Amberson and Ivan Tinoco recorded 33 steals and only allowed two shots on goal.

Pierce 2, Hamilton 0

In Arbuckle — Adolfo Ramirez and Victor Santillan each scored a goal as the Bears blanked the Braves in the first round of the Northern Section Division III postseason.

Sophomore goalkeeper Victor Navaro made three key saves in goal for the Bears in the second half to preserve the victory.

Pierce (8-4-3) travels to No. 1 Esparto on Tuesday.

West Valley 5, Sutter 1

In Cottonwood — The Huskies (7-10-1) were ousted in the first round of the Division II playoffs by the Eagles.

No additional information was provided by Sutter.

GIRLS SOCCER

Winters 3, Live Oak 2

In Winters — The Lions' Northern Section playoff run was short-lived as they fell in the first round to the Warriors in Division II.

The two teams were tied 1-1 at halftime and 2-2 late in regulation before Winters scored the eventual winning goal.

Clarissa Herrera scored both goals and Lacey Herbert added an assist for Live Oak (8-8-1), which earned its second consecutive Sacramento Valley League-I title this season.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Maxwell 41, Biggs 34

In Maxwell — The Panthers completed their Mid-Valley League championship run with a victory over the Wolverines on Senior Night.

The Panthers (16-5, 8-1 in MVL play) will discover their playoff fate when the Northern Section releases its brackets on Saturday.

Ashley Azevedo led the way against the Wolverines with 12 points and six assists. Jenna Powell added a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Jessie Otterson scored seven points to go with nine rebounds and Kailey McKinley pulled down 11 boards and dropped in six points.

Gridley 55, Wheatland 42

In Wheatland — The Bulldogs ended the regular season on a high note with a Butte View League victory over the Pirates.

Ashtyn MacFarlane led Gridley with 13 points and 15 rebounds, while Elizabeth Osbourn tacked on 12 for the Bulldogs (9-16, 4-4).

Kassidy Heuvelhorst scored a game-high 17 points for Wheatland (11-14, 2-6) to go with seven rebounds.

Halen Mariano scored 10 points and totaled seven steals.
