Letter: Gun control editorial off base

Re: Guest View of Feb. 4, "Gun control opponents reject all conversation," by the Miami Herald:

Apparently the writer failed to listen to Wayne LaPierre's entire statement. He said the major concern with gun owners is that a background check would include registration. Anyone with a modicum of history knows that registration is a precursor to confiscation.

The editorial makes no mention of what happens after initial sale.

The only way the whole idea can work is if there is total registration, just like vehicles. The tail end of the article refers to "a Congress that cannot respond to tragedies like Newtown." Congress has a miserable track record of responding to tragedies. They can't even pass a budget.

And we are supposed to listen to the "poignant voices" of Gabby Giffords? Let's hear Gabby recite the Second Amendment to the US Constitution.
