Where can I get wig for chemo patient?

Q: My grandmother is in the hospital going through chemotherapy. I have been growing my hair long for about seven or eight years. I promised her I would give her my hair. It's past my waist. She always said she wanted my hair and I have the chance to do it. I am trying to find out where I can go to have a wig made for her.

A: We figured a logical place to start asking questions would be the American Cancer Society. ACS Sacramento spokeswoman Marcia Robinson mentioned three groups that accept hair donations: Wigs For Kids, Locks of Love and Pantene Beautiful Lengths.

Obviously enough, Wigs For Kids provides wigs for kids, not for adults. Florida-based Locks of Love also accepts hair donations — but for kids, according to the group's Web site.

Wisconsin-based Pantene Beautiful Lengths accepts donations for adults — but with no guarantee that the finished wig will go to a specific person such as your grandmother, said Robinson.

Your best bet is probably a private wig maker, which can't be cheap.

Barbara Lang of Marysville's Heads Up Styling Salon — the only local wig establis ment listed in the Yellow Pages — said measurements are taken there for custom wigs. But all the hair comes from overseas donors, she said.
