Man arrested on attempted arson charges

An Orland man was arrested Friday on suspicion of attempted arson after he reportedly threatened to torch a vehicle belonging to another man.

Glenn County Sheriff Larry Jones said a motive for Shane Thomas Hayes' reported actions has not been established, but a witnesses said they saw Hayes slosh gas from a red-colored container inside a 2000 Honda Civic.

The incident reportedly occurred around noon at a residence in the 6000 block of County Road 14 near Orland.

James Shull, the father of the Honda's owner, said he had earlier seen Hayes walking around outside the home he was visiting.

When he yelled to Hayes to ask what he was doing at the car, the man reportedly set the gas container down and walked off.

When Shull and 29-year-old Gabriel Dougherty got into Honda, Shull noticed the seat of the car was wet with gasoline, Jones said.

Hayes reportedly returned to the car with a small white box of matches, and was attempting to get it opened when Dougherty took it away from him, Jones said.

When confronted about what his intentions were, Hayes reportedly picked up the gas container and ran off on foot.

Deputies later found him in a small, partially dismantled camper south of the residence.

Hayes, who denied that he was going to set the vehicle on fire, was booked into the Glenn County Jail. Bail was set at $10,000.
