Letter: Herger's 'terrorist' backing outrageous

Our congressman, Wally Herger, finally made it into the national news. When a member of the audience at a recent town hall meeting in Redding announced to Herger that "I am a proud, right-wing terrorist," Congressman Herger's response was "Amen, God bless you. There is a great American." Disagreement is very American, as is civil debate. However, praising an "American terrorist" steps over the line into the dark side and into shades of Timothy McVeigh, the Oklahoma City bomber who killed many people.

Incidentally, I learned of the Herger statement just after a phone call from my daughter about the pipe bomb explosion in a San Mateo high school, whose students were evacuated to the nearby middle school which my granddaughter attends. Unfortunately, these so-called "terrorists" sometimes do more than talk or threaten. We neither need nor want that in this great country, nor does anyone need to praise them.
