Johnson's big day not enough for 49ers
Juan Johnson had a game for the record books, but it wasn't enough for the Yuba College football team to earn a win on Saturday.
Johnson carried the ball 45 times for a school-record 439 yards and four touchdowns, but the 49ers fell just short at the end in a narrow 42-37 loss to visiting Los Medanos in Linda.
That staggering yardage total shattered Johnson's own record of 349 set in the season opener against Gavilan. Ironically, Yuba lost that game too, 33-20.
With the loss, the 49ers slipped to 4-5 overall and to 2-2 in the Bay Valley Conference. The setback also halted Yuba's two-game winning streak.
The Niners trailed 35-13 in the third quarter before rallying back to make a game of it late.
Johnson had two touchdowns and John Leal kicked the third of his three field goals to cut the lead to just five with 5:39 remaining.
Yuba moved the ball down to the goal line on the final drive of the game, but Jeremy Williams was stopped a half-yard short of the end zone on fourth down with a minute remaining and Los Medanos ran out the clock to earn the win.
