LOCAL ROUNDUP: Lady Bulldogs sweep Indians
After a season-opening loss to Hamilton last week, the Gridley High volleyball team recovered nicely with a resounding 3-0 victory over Marysville at Lesta Joubert Gymnasium on Wednesday night.
The Bulldogs won by game scores of 25-21, 25-19 and 25-12 to record their first victory of the season.
Senior Ashtyn MacFarlane led the Bulldogs (1-1) with nine kills, while junior Megan Anthony added eight kills of her own. Jackie Blancett added six kills.
Senior setter Madison Mardesich dished out 15 assists and Catherine Roman, Claira Hunter and Anthony all had six digs apiece.
Marimar Terriquez and Taylor Ferrari each had seven assists for the Indians (0-1). Brooke Bigley picked up eight digs and Morgan Cowan-Fayter recorded three digs.
The Indians won the JV game 19-25, 25-22, 15-13, led by Savanna Harris, who had 12 assists, two kills and four aces.
Haley Williamson picked up three kills and Ashlie Adamson recorded three aces and three digs for Marysville (1-1).
Wheatland 3, Lindhurst 0
The Pirates rebounded from a season-opening loss to Willows on Tuesday with a 25-5, 25-5, 25-5 rout of the Blazers in Wheatland.
Senior Jamie Adams, the A-D's All-Area setter in 2011, led the Pirates with 16 assists.
Kirstin Johnson tallied seven kills and Kiley DeCoster recorded six kills and four aces from the service line.
The Pirates opened their season with a five-set loss to Willows on Tuesday night.
Wheatland led two games to one before dropping the last two games in a 25-17, 22-25, 16-25, 25-20, 15-9 setback.
Johnson tallied 11 kills, Kassidy Heuvelhorst had nine kills and Mikayla McLahahan finished with 10 digs to lead the way for Wheatland (1-1) in the loss.
Wheatland's JV squad defeated the Blazers 25-12, 25-18. The Pirates dropped their match to Willows on Tuesday, 25-18, 25-16.
Willows 3, Sutter 1
The Huskies tied the match early at 1-1, but dropped the final two games, falling to the Honkers by scores of 25-21, 21-25, 25-20, 25-20.
Alix Russell recorded 10 service points, including five in a row in the third game, and an ace.
Savannah Besso had eight service points and Bianca Almeida tallied seven service points and an ace for Sutter (0-1).
BOYS SOCCER
Faith Christian 2, Redding Christian 0
Micah Atkins and Sam Ithurburn scored a goal each and Drew Tollenaar added an assist to lead the Lions to their first win of the season at home.
Chase Tollenaar had six saves to record the shutout and coach Robert Ripley praised the defensive efforts of Joe Valrey and Craig Andrus in the win for the Lions (1-1-1).

Yuba off to hot start
The Yuba College volleyball team started its season strong by winning all three matches to take first at the Modesto Classic on Wednesday.
The 49ers beat host Modesto 25-17, 25-19, 25-14 in the opener and followed that up with a pair of wins over College of the Siskiyous (21-25, 25-15, 30-28, 25-17) and College of Alameda (25-16, 25-22, 25-5).
Brenna McDonald had 28 kills and four aces, Katie Reiland finished with 19 kills and seven blocks and Katie Olson added 18 kills, 10 digs and six aces to lead the way for Yuba in the tournament.
Freshman Angela DeHaan had 14 kills, four blocks and four aces, Emily Toledo chipped in with 17 kills, Shaila Gidel added 13 digs and Sam Foster dished out 97 assists.
