LOCAL ROUNDUP: Dog fight in Gridley

Huskies top Bulldogs; Pirates, Falcons, Honkers win

Alix Russell and Savannah Besso served up a Butte View League victory for Sutter in Farmer's Hall in Gridley on Tuesday.

The two combined on 34 service points and four aces and the Huskies went on to beat the Bulldogs 25-16, 25-10, 17-25, 25-16.

Russell finished with a serving percentage of 100, ran off five straight points in the second game and led the team with seven digs. Besso recorded eight straight points from the line in the second game and led the team with 24 assists.

Ava Payton and Erika Larsen each dropped in eight kills. Larsen added three blocks, while Payton finished with five digs. Brooke Smallwood had six digs.

Mikayla Caldwell had four kills, Shelby Hill chipped in four and Jaelyn Hoffman finished with two kills and three blocks for Sutter (14-7 overall, 1-0 in conference).

The Sutter JV team won 25-20, 25-23.

Sara Stephenson had three aces and five kills, Bailey Brown added four kills and Chloe Heap had a team-high 11 assists.

Wheatland 3, Winters 0

In Wheatland — The Pirates opened BVL play in impressive fashion with a 25-8, 25-5, 25-13 victory over the Warriors.

Kirstin Johnson amassed a match-high 11 kills, while Cassidy Heuvelhorst added eight for Wheatland. Senior setter Jamie Adams dished out 29 assists.

The Pirates (10-2, 1-0) continue BVL action on Thursday at Orland.

Wheatland's JV team beat Winters 25-23, 25-27, 15-13.

River Valley 3, Inderkum 0

In Yuba City — Sophomore Courtney Massengale tallied 13 kills and sister Taylor Massengale added 12 kills of her own to help lead River Valley to a 25-9, 25-9, 25-19 Tri-County Conference victory over the Tigers at Falcon Gymnasium.

Sierra Pedley chipped in with seven aces and seven digs, Amrita Dale had 14 assists and seven digs and McKenzie Skyberg doled out 15 assists in the win for the Falcons (15-1, 3-0).

River Valley won the junior varsity match 25-14, 25-18 to improve to 9-1 overall and 3-0 in TCC play.

The Falcons also took the freshman match 25-7, 25-9. Morgan McIntyre had six aces and Bailey Fletcher had five in the win for RV (10-4, 1-1).

Yuba City 3, Woodland 1

In Woodland — The Honkers rebounded from last week's loss to Pioneer with a 25-18, 25-16, 23-25, 25-22 win over the Wolves in TCC play.

Maddie Collins had a strong all-around match for the Honkers with 11 kills, seven blocks and five digs. Ally Reece added seven kills.

Libero Ally Reines tallied 20 digs and setter Brittany Walker put up 36 assists, 14 digs and three aces. Jordan Coxe made 11 blocks at the net with seven kills.

Yuba City (8-12, 2-1) hosts Natomas on Thursday.

The Honkers' JV team (8-2, 3-0) beat Woodland 25-18, 25-10.

Laura Solorio dished out 11 assists and served two aces. Alex McElfresh amassed four kills and two aces.

West Campus 3, Marysville 2

In Marysville — The Indians gave the Golden Empire League's first-place team all it could handle, but West Campus escaped Lesta Joubert Gymnasium with a 25-23, 18-25, 25-15, 27-29, 15-11 victory.

Candice Hugi led Marysville (8-7, 4-3) with 10 kills, three blocks and an ace. Annie Wooten added five aces, five kills and six digs.

Mattyann Townsend served four aces to go with six kills and a block. Marimar Terriquez dished out 10 assists to go with her two aces and a dig.

Brooke Bigley was solid in the back row with 10 digs along with two kills.

Marysville's JV team (8-5, 5-2) fell 25-5, 25-14 to the Warriors.

Hamilton 3, East Nicolaus 0

In Hamilton City — The Spartans gave the Braves a fight in the first two games, but Hamilton ended up with the sweep by game scores of 25-20, 25-13, 25-7 in a Sacramento Valley League match.

Isabella McNicol amassed eight digs and four aces, while Brooke Sullivan picked up four kills, five assists and two aces for the Spartans.

East Nicolaus (4-11, 2-2) continues SVL play on Thursday at home against Durham.

Faith Christian 3, Lutheran 0

In Elk Grove — The Lions improved to 6-8 overall and 2-3 in Sacramento Metropolitan Athletic League play with a 25-20, 25-9, 25-11 victory over the Panthers on the road.

Kelsey Daugherty had five kills and six aces and Victoria Helm posted five assists and four aces in the victory.

Faith's JV team (9-1) defeated Victory Christian in nonleague action in Carmichael.

The Lions won by game scores of 25-11 and 25-16. Tina Hendricks led the team in assists and Adreanna Ekdawy recorded a team-high in aces.

BOYS SOCCER

Faith Christian 3, Paradise Adventist 2

In Yuba City — Sun Lee scored two goals and Drew Tollenaar added another as the Lions edged the Cougars in nonleague play.

Sam Ithurburn had an assist and Drew LeBlanc was credited with outstanding play on defense by coach Robert Ripley. Goalkeeper Chase Tollenaar made 11 saves for Faith (6-7-2).

New Life Christian 4, Freedom Christian 0

In Olivehurst — Kobe Bancroft scored a pair of goals and the Crusaders topped Freedom Christian to pick up their second Northern Pacific Athletic Conference victory of the season.

Sullivan Guy and Wyatt Johnson each scored a goal, while Simeon Joiner and Luis Casillas were both credited with quality defense.

With the win, New Life improved to 2-4 overall and 2-2 in conference.

GIRLS GOLF

River Valley 286, Natomas 312

In Sacramento — Andi Richmond shot a 49 and Sylvia Chavez carded a 50 to help lift the Falcons over the Nighthawks in a TCC match played on the front nine at Teal Bend Golf Club on Monday.

Lea Richmond fired a 58, Mary Osborn shot a 61 and Cameron Brennan carded a 68 to round out the scores for RV, which improved to 5-2 on the season with the win.

GIRLS TENNIS

Live Oak 9, Willows 0

In Willows — Another sweep for the Lions, but it came with some struggle.

While Lucero Topete (6-0, 6-0), Aisha Khan (6-2, 6-4) and Crystal Rodriguez (6-1, 6-1) rolled in straight sets, Jacque Mullen (4-6, 6-1, 6-2), Clarissa Herrera (2-6, 6-0, 6-2) and Lupe Chavez (1-6, 6-1, 6-2) battled to win.

In doubles, Rodriguez and Herrera rolled 8-3, Khan and Chavez edged out an 8-6 win, and Lindsey Hovey and Mishu Gulati cruised 8-2.

Yuba 4, Contra Costa 4

In San Pablo — Wendy Valencia had a hat trick for the 49ers, but Yuba (0-5-3, 0-1-2) had to settle for a Bay Valley Conference draw with the Comets

Valencia also assisted Yuba's fourth goal, scored by Elizabeth Ferreyra.
