PREP ROUNDUP: New Life girls hoops picks up huge road win

Elicia Villafranco scored a game-high 21 points and the New Life Christian girls basketball team picked up a huge Northern Pacific Athletic Conference victory by beating four-time defending league champion Trinity Prep 45-31 in Napa on Friday night.

Playing with just six girls like they have all season, the Crusaders led by as many as 22 points in the fourth quarter and never let up to snap Trinity Prep's 35-game winning streak in the NPAC.

Rachel Whiteley scored 12 points and Haley Moody added six for New Life, which improved to 12-2 overall and 3-0 in league play with the win.

Wheatland 48, Hamilton 28

In Hamilton City — Junior Kassidy Heuvelhorst turned in another strong performance by recording 16 points, 10 rebounds and five steals to lead the Pirates past the Braves in their final nonleague tune-up.

Halen Mariano scored 10 points, and Marisa Mullen and Paige Gasper added eight points each as the Pirates ended their nonleague slate with a 9-8 record. Morgan Calkins pulled down seven rebounds in the win as well.

Wheatland begins Butte View League play at home against Sutter on Tuesday.

Maxwell 59, Quincy 42

In Quincy — Jenna Powell tallied 16 points and nine rebounds, and Kailey McKinley notched 14 points and nine boards to lead the Panthers to a win in their Mid-Valley League opener.

Brittney Haywood added 10 points and six rebounds, and Ashley Azevedo recorded six points and six assists for Maxwell (8-4, 1-0).

Capital Christian 50, Marysville 41

In Sacramento — Bayshta Aguila scored 21 points and pulled down seven rebounds as the Indians fell to the Cougars in Golden Empire League action.

Holly Tarr totaled 17 rebounds for Marysville (8-11, 0-2).

Mesa Verde 49, Lindhurst 31

In Olivehurst — Sarah May scored 12 points and Mirian Corona chipped in with eight, but the Blazers (3-10, 0-2) fell to the Mavericks in a GEL contest at home.

Inderkum 58, Yuba City 32

In Sacramento — Destiny Fleenor tallied nine points and Tiffany Friend added seven as the Honkers (3-13, 0-1) fell to the Tigers in their Tri-County Conference opener.

BOYS BASKETBALL

East Nicolaus 59, Willows 41

In Nicolaus — Drew Orr scored 22 points and knocked four 3-pointers as the Spartans took down the Honkers in Sacramento Valley League action.

Ty Shill put up 10 points and Dylan Thornsberry added nine for East Nic (5-8, 2-1).

New Life 66, Trinity Prep 56

In Napa — Sullivan Guy recorded 17 points, six rebounds and four steals and the Crusaders improved to a perfect 3-0 in NPAC play with a road victory.

Kobe Bancroft chipped in with 11 points, six rebounds and four assists, Tyler Treat finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds and Thomas Marquette had 12 points and seven boards in the win for New Life (8-5).

Mesa Verde 58, Lindhurst 52

In Olivehurst — Devin Ward and Alex Yang both scored 12 points for the Blazers (9-10, 0-2) in the GEL loss to the Mavericks.

JV BOYS BASKETBALL

Lindhurst 45, Mesa Verde 44

In Olivehurst — Josh Yang scored 18 points and Rene Corona finished with 10 to lift the Blazers (7-8, 1-1) to a GEL win over the Mavericks.

Wheatland 66, Hamilton 27

In Hamilton City — Justin Hawkins scored 13 points and Josh Servin tacked on 11 in the nonleague victory for Wheatland (9-5).

River Valley 58, Pioneer 37

In Woodland — Devin Cates scored 14 points and Robert Quintero added 13 points and five steals in Thursday's TCC win over the Patriots.

Sukh Sooch added eight points for the Falcons.

JV GIRLS BASKETBALL

River Valley 48, Pioneer 37

Shaina Rasul scored 10 points, and Jessica Ruiz and Lauren Kroeger each scored eight points to lead the Falcons (9-5, 1-0) to a win in their TCC opener.

The RV frosh team completed the sweep with a 41-0 win as the Falcons improved to 11-3 overall.
