Letter: Discussion more than health care

I made my signs, held them up at the Herger town hall meeting in Marysville and learned a lot. I didn’t get arrested. Channel 13 asked to interview me, but I told them I came only to hold up my sign.

In the overflow room, while I was holding up the sign that asked, “Where would we be if Social Security had been privatized?” a lovely lady walking by me and out of the room smiled in confidence and said, “I would be fine.” She looked like a self-fulfilled rancher of implicit integrity. As I held that sign, I found a new strength in a similar belief I have about myself.

We were two strong women on opposite sides of the health care situation in the community we share.

When other people are hurting, they affect the quality of my life in many direct ways: crime in the streets, welfare, overcrowded prisons, stressed court systems that come from overworked law enforcement, and, ultimately, my personal safety.

Because I worked with kids all my life, I know well how hurt happens.  She hasn’t had my experience.

My other signs expressed my need to support others, for my own well being.  I gave the signs to Wally Herger. I hope he reads them. I look forward to holding signs again.

This discussion is about more than health care. The ultimate decision will reflect how we empower other human beings that live in our community, so they can support themselves, and keep the quality of life for all high.
